Graveside Service will be held 1:30 pm Wednesday, May 29 2024 at Ft Mitchell National Cemetery.  Visitation will be Tuesday from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm at the funeral home

Joe Lewis Gary passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 21, 2024.

Joe Lewis Gary was born in Hatchechubbee, Alabama on July 31st, 1947 to the late Curtis Gary and the late Elvesta (Harris) Gary. Joe was the third oldest of seven children, two of whom passed before reaching adulthood. He is  preceded in death by his father, mother and older brother, Allen C. Gary.

Joe graduated from Russell County Training School and worked at the Fieldcrest Mill as a textile worker. At the age of 21, in 1968, Joe was drafted into the U.S. Army and served for two years in Vietnam before being honorably discharged. He was noted to be a worthy marksman and sharpshooter. Joe continued to work at Fieldcrest Mill for 36 years until he retired.

Joe married Lois (Word) Gary on July 5th, 1978 and they enjoyed over 45 wonderful years together. They opened their home and hearts and raised a beloved niece, Tatyana Thomas, for over 17 years.

For anyone who knew Joe, they could not have a bad word to say about him. He was of a quiet nature, and he was a kind and gentle-hearted person. He never had much to say but he was there when you needed him.

Joe is survived by his wife, Lois Gary; his daughter, Kimberly Scott; three sisters, Eva Howsmon, Althea Embry, and Katherine (Robert) Barnes; sister-in-laws, Lillie (Hosea) Upshaw, Jeanie Wilkerson and brother-in-law, Homer (Denise) Word Jr.  and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He lived a full life and he will be dearly missed by all those who knew him.
