Upon graduating Mobile County Training School she journeyed to Montgomery, Alabama to attend Alabama State Teachers College (Alabama State University). Upon graduation, she was recruited by Ms. Susie Allen for a teaching position at Phenix City Elementary School where Ms. Allen was principal. She would return to Alabama State University to earn her Masters Degree.
Shortly after arriving in Phenix City, Josiephine met William Ingersoll and they later married. To this union were born two sons—William "Pete" Ingersoll, and George T. Ingersoll.
Mrs. Ingersoll continued to teach in the Phenix City School System for 40 years, retiring in 1980. An avid supporter of education, she was one of the first teachers selected for Head Start in Phenix City. Because of her recognized teaching skills and dedication, she became the head teacher for the Head Start program and remained an integral part of the program from its inception until her retirement.
Mrs. Ingersoll grew up in the church and as a pre-teen gave her life to Christ. She later converted to Catholicism along with her husband, and they were baptized at Mother Mary Mission in 1965. They attended services there until their later years. She was very supportive of the church and school having sent her sons and numerous grandchildren to Mother Mary Mission.
Mrs. Ingersoll was a caring person. She helped many students gain entrance to Alabama State University and Tuskegee University. She firmly believed that if a child didn't learn, you need to examine how the child was taught. She would express her strong belief that all children had the capacity to learn. She loved her students and showered them with affection, understanding, patience, and positivity
