Obituary
Deacon Norman Pitts, Jr., age 93, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2026. Born on August 5, 1933, in Salem, Alabama, he was the son of the late Norman Pitts, Sr., and Estella Pinkard Pitts. He lived a life marked by faith, dedication, hard work, and an enduring commitment to his family and community.
Deacon Pitts was preceded in death by his beloved parents and his devoted wife of 63 years, Clara Coar Pitts. Their years together represented a lasting bond of love and commitment that remained an important part of his life and legacy.
A man of deep faith, Deacon Pitts was a longtime and faithful member of Weeping Mary Baptist Church, now known as Spread the Word Ministries, in Valley, Alabama, where he served as chairman of the Deacon Board. Although he remained connected to Spread the Word Ministries, he later attended Franchise Missionary Baptist Church and Rhema Word Church in Phenix City, Alabama. His years of service reflected his dedication to the church and his commitment to serving others.
Deacon Pitts also established a lasting legacy through his profession as a barber. He began his career at Green’s Barber Shop in Columbus, Georgia. In 1955, he ventured out on his own and opened a barbershop in Phenix City, Alabama. Through years of hard work, skill, and dedication, he built a business that continues to serve the community today. His sons, Kevin and Nolan Pitts, now operate the shop, carrying forward the family tradition and the legacy their father established more than seven decades ago.
Deacon Norman Pitts, Jr., will be remembered for his faith, perseverance, entrepreneurial spirit, and the legacy of service he leaves behind. His life touched family members, church congregations, friends, and generations of customers who came to know him through his work and presence in the community. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on through the family he loved, the faith he demonstrated, and the business he built.
His life was a testament to faith, family, and the enduring value of hard work. Deacon Norman Pitts, Jr., leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and serve as a source of pride for generations to come.
